About Course

The Medical Ethics course focuses on the fundamentals of ethics that are essential to the health care profession. During the course, students will learn the basic principles of medical ethics, such as respect for patient autonomy, the principle of non-harm, beneficence and justice. Emphasis will be placed on the practical aspects of applying ethics in medical practice, as well as issues related to medical legal liability and contemporary health care challenges.

Course Objective:

To contribute to the development of digital competencies in students and professionals and the implementation of innovative strategies that are essential for the effective and quality performance of both professional activities and life in general. This includes the integration of ethics into global and local health care processes, taking into account new technologies and digitalization.

Practical significance and utilization of the knowledge gained:

1. To acquire an understanding of the various aspects of medical ethics, including the rules and principles that underlie professional medical practice.

2. to acquire the theoretical and practical knowledge to effectively resolve ethical dilemmas in medicine.

3. Developing ethical decision-making skills and building digital competencies to apply ethical standards in the medical field.

4. Applying the acquired knowledge to improve the quality of medical care, patient trust and ethical standards in the digital transformation of healthcare.

Course Content

Topic 1: Introduction to medical ethics
Basic principles of medical ethics: autonomy, beneficence, non-maleficence, justice. Introduction to major ethical theories such as utilitarianism, deontology and virtue ethics.

Topic 2: Ethical dilemmas in medicine
Examples of ethical dilemmas faced by physicians. The role of medical staff in ethical decision-making.

Topic 3: Patient’s rights
The right to informed consent. Issues of confidentiality and protection of patient's personal information.

Topic 4: Ethical issues in specialized medical practice
Ethics in palliative care. Ethics in genetics and reproductive technologies.

Topic 5: Medical ethics and digital technologies
The impact of digital technology on medical practice and ethical standards. Moral issues in the use of artificial intelligence in medicine.
