This is a profound and relevant topic. Psychologically and visually, it hinges on the phenomenon of “tunnel vision”: when a narrowing of perception inevitably creates the image of an enemy, as everything outside of focus begins to seem threatening.
Here’s a concept sketch for an art project or research project:
Concept Title: “The Optics of Enmity: The Dictatorship of Focus”
1. Main Idea (Thesis)
Conflict is not a clash between two sides, but the result of a lack of vision. When a person’s gaze is rigidly focused on a single point (an idea, a goal, a grievance), the entire surrounding space becomes a “blind spot.” The brain instinctively fills this void with fear, transforming the unknown into hostility.
Focus as a Cage: Attention becomes a tool of exclusion. The more clearly we see one detail, the more we ignore the context.
Birth of the Enemy: The enemy is always the “Other” whom we do not see fully. This limited perspective allows us to paint demonic traits onto our opponent because we fail to see their human complexity.
